New York Film Academy Filmmaking Student

The New York Film Academy has always been my dream school to go to after High School. It was the only college I applied to because I couldn’t see myself anywhere else and my dream of getting accepted came true! I took Multimedia Technology for 3 years in high school so I knew the basics of film editing, cinematography, etc. I wanted to learn so much more about film and I knew that the only school that could teach me things I didn’t know was the New York Film Academy. The first DAY of the academy was hard! I thought I knew what we were going to learn, but I never touched a 16mm camera until my first day of college. The academy was NOT kidding about sometimes having 12-hour days!

Since attending the academy, we had a guest speaker and screening almost every week! I networked with a lot of people and by doing so, I even got to attend a private screening of Silver Linings Playbook featuring Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper; and the movie, Fun Size! This weekend I went to the New York City Horror Film Festival where I saw three short films and a feature length film! Not only did I get to meet the director from the feature film, I got to meet and network with a past graduate from NYFA whose thesis film, “The Hierarchy”, was in the festival! It made me so excited to be a part of the academy and made me want to enter my films into festivals someday!

I love all my teachers at NYFA! I’m such a nerd that I googled them on the first day and I am very impressed with their past and current work. I even had my Director’s Craft instructor, Billy Tyler Smith, autograph his feature film for me! I know that I’m learning from the best because they have such good stories about their experiences in the industry. Learning from them inspires me to want to become a teacher and teach students about my soon-to-be experiences in the film industry! The majority of my instructors are male so the movie examples they show are not all in my interest. I will most likely show “Legally Blonde” when I become a teacher.

After this year of the New York Film Academy, I will be attending the campus in Los Angeles to earn my Master’s Degree in Filmmaking. This was another reason I chose the academy over other film schools. NYFA has campuses almost EVERYWHERE. I think it is so beautiful how it is located in different countries as well as other states. I believe that every inspiring movie will come from a NYFA student because we are from all over the world and have different stories to tell! It was one of the few schools that allowed me to travel! To earn my masters degree, it is required to have one year in NYC and another 3 years in LA. No argument there from me! They are my two favorite cities and I can’t wait to fall in love with both. They are different in the most beautiful ways I have heard.

Once I graduate NYFA, I plan on getting an internship with Warner Brothers studio or another huge production company. New York Film Academy encourages you to dream BIG and take risks! I’m getting choked up writing about it. The first day of NYFA I was told by instructor Michael Sandoval, “As of this moment, you are all filmmakers.” I am a filmmaker and I plan on keeping it that way.

Hey Farah,

I’d be happy to share a little feedback concerning my attendance at New York Film Academy, and maybe contribute in encouraging a hesitant student to venture into the creative world of New York Film Academy.

I attended the New York Film Academy in February 2012, in order to take the 12 week directing workshop.

Being a filmmaking graduate, and having been in different workshops around the world, I had plenty of expectations given how renowned NYFA is. But to my surprise, I learned first hand that not only does the ENTIRE staff of NYFA dedicate itself to help their students learn, but also they are genuinely concerned about the students growth and direction.

In the most supporting and welcoming way, I was transferred three weeks after the workshop began to the SCREENWRITING workshop, where I found myself needing that particular direction to take my skills as a filmmaker to the next level. And I couldn’t have done it without NYFA’s honest intention and care.

Because of that workshop, I am now focused on Screenwriting, and I am taking the next step by acquiring my Masters in Screenwriting for Film. I have no one else to thank but the amazing team/family of NYFA.

I guess that’s what I have to say about NYFA.
And I do mean it.
Thank you Farrah.
You’ve been amazing.

Within the worldwide realm of filmmaking, New York Film Academy (NYFA) is a miracle maker! Why? Irrespective of nationality, age, or prior training, NYFA has the ability to systematically help their students discover their latent talents and ultimately finesse it to a point such that the students could confidently venture out into the boundless world of fantasy and magic (film industry) with a significant chance of making a difference.

Though resident in the United States, I’m originally from Nigeria and I’m in my late 40s. My pre-New York Film Academy training was in business. Armed with B. Hons. from The Hague University, and BBA from Texas Tech, it didn’t take long after graduation for me to figure out that knowledge in business was not enough to realize my desire to help improve humanity. It would take a niche product for my natural and acquired entrepreneurial tendencies to amount to anything.

Dear Evan, New York Film Academy Admissions Counselor
I think that New York Film Academy was a great experience and helped me in many ways as an actor and as a director. The organization is doing great things not only in New York, where it has become an institution, but across the globe. I really enjoyed my experience and am thankful for the help New York Film Academy gave me in continuing the pursuit of my career.

New York Film Academy Disney Orlando

Dear New York Film Academy,

I wanted to say thanks for having such an awesome camp at New York Film Academy Disney in Orlando. My son, Bryce came for the first time. He did one week film camp. He wants to come back for three weeks next year. He has OCD / anxiety and worries a lot. Your staff was so patient and good to him. Bryce learned a lot and had a great experience. Please tell Becca, Michael, and Sean thanks for all they did and the rest of the staff. Have a great summer.

First, let me commend you on your choice of professionals you have sent to lead this large New York Film Academy group here at Disney.  Everyone from Michael to Alex to Gina to Shawn to Cindy is obviously a carefully chosen professional who excels in his/her area of expertise.  Their commitment, knowledge, ability to teach, organize, and remain pleasant and cooperative at all times is “spot on.”

The confidence and organization of the New York Film Academy Orlando Team allows me, as the parent, to NOT worry or question my decision to send Lana here at the age of 13.  She is in good hands and I know it.  The security and tight ship your people run is imperative in this situation and they have it totally under control.

Next, let me tell you what a memorable experience Lana is having here at New York Film Academy Orlando.  She is loving every second of class and is already upset about only having one week left.  The amount of material you have covered is voluminous, however, she is absorbing an amazing amount of it.  We homeschool Lana and her sister – and trust me when I tell you, there is NO WAY I could get them up at 4:30 am AND have them happy about it!  Well done.

Now that I see the caliber of professional you must entice to make this commitment, I understand why the course is priced where it is.  I now feel I have not “sent Lana to a course,” but rather, I have made an investment in her future.

I thank each of you for your commitment to excellence and will recommend this program without reservation to colleagues and friends.

Best Regards and many thanks,

Anne Winjum (Lana’s mother)
